[ Rock-lift Rings™ ]
We have been making Rock-lift style rings™ for over 20 years. These rings are some of the most beautiful we've made. Basically, it is a method of making a copy of the surface texture of an object and converting it into gold or platinum. This texture becomes part of your jewelry. It makes a lovely keepsake, rather like a "3D snapshot", of an object that's important to you. One example is the surface texture of a rock you brought from a mountain you climbed, or a beach you walked on. The rough, or irregular texture of rocks is ideal, but many materials work: pieces of wedding dress, wood, coins, even finger prints can be used. Gems can worked into most designs if desired. Each ring is custom made for you. Another example of Joseph's work with this technique can be found in the book: Jewelry: Contemporary Design and Technique, by Chuck Evans, page 154.

An important consideration is the amount of detail in your object. Rings are small, so you need a fair amount detail per piece for it to show up in your ring. Generally, only part of the ring is made with the texture (see example at right, where the top of the ring is from a rock texture, and superb natural colored diamonds were added). We are happy to look over any material that you want to use, but please call us first so that we can advise you before you ship.

One further note, with hard objects, like rocks or coins, the object usually isn't damaged by the process; soft objects, like pieces of cloth or wood, may be damaged (please tell us if the object is of special concern to you).
